What to Expect During a Water Heater Installation

Why Installation Process Matters

A water heater replacement is one of the more involved plumbing jobs in a home. It involves draining the old tank, disconnecting gas or electric lines, lifting a heavy unit into place, and making new connections that must meet local code. The process typically takes a few hours, but the exact time depends on whether the new unit is the same size and type as the old one, and whether any modifications to the venting or gas line are needed. Knowing what happens step by step helps you prepare your home and ask the right questions.

Many homeowners are surprised by the amount of work that goes into a straightforward swap. Our crew follows a consistent sequence to ensure the job is done safely and correctly. The goal is to get your hot water back on as quickly as possible while making sure the new unit operates efficiently and meets all safety requirements. This guide explains each stage of the installation so you know what to expect when our plumber arrives at your door.

Preparing the Work Area

Before the plumber starts, they will clear the area around the existing water heater. Move any stored boxes, tools, or debris away from the unit so there is room to work. If the water heater is in a closet or utility room, make sure the door can open fully. The plumber will lay down drop cloths to protect the floor from water and debris. They will also shut off the water supply at the valve above the heater and turn off the power or gas to the unit. For gas heaters, the gas valve is closed and the pilot light is extinguished.

The old tank must be drained completely before it can be disconnected. The plumber attaches a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and runs the hose to a floor drain, a laundry sink, or outside. Draining can take 15 to 30 minutes depending on the tank size and how much sediment has built up inside. Sediment at the bottom of the tank can clog the drain valve, so the plumber may need to flush the tank or partially open the valve to clear it. Once the tank is empty, the water supply and gas or electrical connections are disconnected.

Removing the Old Unit

With the tank drained and disconnected, the plumber removes the old water heater. For a gas unit, the vent pipe is detached from the top of the tank. For an electric unit, the wiring is labeled and disconnected from the junction box. The plumber then cuts the old water supply lines and gas line if they are copper or black iron, or unscrews them if they are flexible connectors. The old tank is lifted out of place and taken away. Most plumbers will haul the old unit off for disposal, but confirm that before the job starts.

Once the old unit is out, the plumber inspects the area for any damage, rust, or signs of leaks from the old connections. They check the floor for levelness and may place a plastic drip pan under the new heater if one is not already present. A drip pan with a drain line is required by code in many areas to catch any future leaks. The plumber also checks the condition of the gas shut-off valve, the pressure relief valve opening, and the vent pipe. If any of those components are old or corroded, they should be replaced during the installation.

Installing the New Water Heater

The new water heater is moved into position and set on the drip pan. The plumber connects the water supply lines using flexible copper or stainless steel braided hoses, which are easier to work with and less likely to leak than rigid pipe. The gas line is connected with a new gas shut-off valve and a flexible gas connector, and the joints are checked for leaks with soapy water or a gas detector. For electric heaters, the wiring is reconnected to the correct terminals, and the ground wire is secured. The pressure relief valve is installed on the side of the tank with a discharge pipe that runs down to within a few inches of the floor.

Once all connections are made, the plumber opens the water supply valve to fill the tank. They open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house to let air escape while the tank fills. When water flows steadily from the faucet, the tank is full. The plumber then relights the pilot light for a gas unit or turns on the breaker for an electric unit. They check for leaks at every connection and verify that the pressure relief valve operates correctly. The temperature is set to a safe level, usually around 120 degrees Fahrenheit, to prevent scalding while still killing bacteria.

Final Checks and What You Should Know

After the installation is complete, the plumber tests the system by running hot water at a faucet and checking the temperature. They listen for unusual noises like popping or rumbling, which can indicate trapped air or sediment. They also inspect the vent pipe for gas units to make sure it draws properly and that no combustion gases are leaking into the room. The plumber will show you where the shut-off valve is and how to operate the temperature dial. They should also explain how to flush the tank annually to remove sediment buildup.

You should ask the plumber about the warranty on the new unit and what is covered. Most water heaters have a manufacturer's warranty on the tank and parts, and the plumber may offer a separate warranty on the labor. Keep the owner's manual and the receipt in a safe place. If you notice any issues in the first few days, such as a leak at a connection or the water not getting hot enough, call the plumber back right away.
